Star Tours Ride Will Feature Scenes From Star Wars The Last Jedi

Posted: October 22, 2017

Passengers aboard Disneyland's Star Tours next month will journey to a new planet in the Star Wars universe. Starting Nov. 17, visitors on board the 3-D simulator ride will explore scenes of Crait, a remote, uncharted planet that is expected to be heavily featured in the Walt Disney Co.'s upcoming "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" movie. The ride will bring guests "in the middle of an epic battle," Disneyland spokesman George Savvas announced on a Disney blog post on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Will other characters be seen such as Luke Skywalker or Rey or Porg? Savvas declined to provide

Um Disneyland Opening Day In 1955 Sounds Like It Was A Dystopian Hell

Posted: October 21, 2017

Disney Parks have a reputation for presenting themselves as perfect, flawless places where nothing could ever possibly go wrong. Some less-than-amazing stuff has allegedly happened inside the parks, but by many accounts, Disney works realllll hard to make it all feel truly magical. But it turns out, Disneyland was decidedly not the happiest place on earth on its opening day, July 17, 1955*. In fact, it sounds like the kind of hellscape that would have made me angrier than if I got tricked into going on the Mad Tea Party. I'm not exaggerating! An observer at the time called it a

Disneyland Got Off To A Nightmare Start In 1955 But Walts Folly Quickly Won Over Fans

Posted: October 21, 2017

Disneyland's opening day, July 17, 1955, was a nightmare. ides broke down. Restaurants ran out of food and drink, and a plumbers' strike meant drinking fountains were in short supply. Long lines formed at bathrooms. Bunting hid unfinished attractions. Women's high-heeled shoes sank into the fresh asphalt. All in front of a national audience of 90 million, then the largest live broadcast in television history on a day that would be known in Disney lore as Black Sunday. But Disneyland's story actually starts two decades earlier with what Walt Disney called "Daddy's Day." On

A Droid Named Jake Roams Disneyland Will This And Other Droids Follow You Around In Star Wars Land

Posted: October 21, 2017

Just a day after The Walt Disney Co. released a trailer for its latest "Star Wars" movie, Disneyland dropped a major hint of what might inhabit Star Wars land: Galaxy's Edge in 2019. An orange and white J4-K3 droid better known as "Jake" was seen roaming around Tomorrowland on Tuesday, Oct. 10, beeping, interacting and mingling with visitors in front of the Star Wars Launch Bay building at Disneyland. Guests followed, took photos, and posed with the 3-foot droid that glided around like a Roomba. Some curious kids wondering aloud if a small person was inside the tiny bot. It's

If You Are Not Taking Advantage Of This Perk You Are Majorly Missing Out

Posted: October 15, 2017

You're standing in a seemingly endless line at Disneyland twiddling your thumbs as the minutes tick by. Why aren't you using those thumbs to flip through your phone? Because, at the worst moment, you lost cell service. This exact scenario happened to me while waiting for Soarin' Over the World in Disney California Adventure (while I was trying to book my next Fastpass on Maxpass, no less!). Then I discovered a solution to my connectivity woes: Disneyland WiFi! Both Disneyland park and Disney California Adventure offer complimentary wireless high-speed internet access in select

Is Jingle Cruise Gone Forever

Posted: October 15, 2017

Between the oversized trees, snow falling on Main Street, and blink-and-they're-gone candy canes for sale, there's plenty to celebrate at Disneyland this Christmas. For Adventureland fans, though, there may be one less present under the tree. That's because Jingle Cruise, the seasonal re-theming of Disneyland's historic Jungle Cruise attraction, will not be returning to the park this winter. Disneyland has confirmed that after four years of the jolly overlay, it will not join the rest of the park's holiday entertainment lineup. Debuting in 2013, the Jingle Cruise inserted

Longest Employed Worker Chef Oscar Martinez Retires After 60 Years

Posted: October 4, 2017

Chef Oscar Martinez, the longest tenured employee at Disneyland Resort, retired Wednesday, Sept. 27. The 81-year-old has worked at the theme park for 60 years. He's been a chef at Main Street, U.S.A.'s Carnation Cafe since 1967. A Disneyland spokeswoman said Martinez "looks forward to traveling, visiting family and hopes to find time to relax." Martinez could not be reached, he was at a private party being held for him on Main Street, U.S.A. Martinez is known as the chef of Disneyland's popular breakfast, "Oscar's Choice," served with his signature potatoes, and in recent

Is The Matterhorn Haunted This Roots Of This Urban Legend Go Back More Than 33 Years

Posted: October 4, 2017

Like a lot of monolithic cultural institutions, a lot of weird stories and urban legends cling to things associated with Disney - from the cartoons to the characters to the parks. But although the stories themselves often end up not being true, there's frequently a little kernel of reality buried somewhere deep inside it. If, for example, you've been wondering, "Is the Matterhorn at Disneyland haunted?", I have news for you: It probably isn't - but as is often the case with urban legends, there is some truth to the story behind this one. It's just not necessarily the bit with the ghost.

A Magical Change To Character Meet And Greets

Posted: October 4, 2017

If you're content with a photograph and a quick hello from Minnie Mouse when visiting Disneyland, prepare to be blown away on your next visit to the parks. That's because for the first time ever, Disney's characters are speaking - yes, actually speaking - directly with park guests. In an unexpected debut at Disney California Adventure this past week, a new "talking" Minnie Mouse, Mickey Mouse, and Donald Duck engaged park-goers in conversation, turning a standard meet-and-greet into a full-fledged interactive experience. Instead of a hug and a wave, the three shared a tale of

My Dad Helped Design Disneyland Here Is What the Park Was Like Before It Opened

Posted: September 30, 2017

When Walt Disney's theme park opened 62 years ago,
it was named Disneyland and christened "The Happiest Place on Earth."
It was a thrill to behold all the rides and exhibits making Disney's movies, cartoons,
and characters come to life. My sister, Diane, and I were treated to an even more special event. Our preview of the park occurred a year earlier than the official opening on July 17, 1955. (Bet you never knew these magical, mind-blowing facts about Disneyland.) Our father, Bob, had been hired as an architect/artist to design some of the buildings in Tomorrowland. One day in

Is Disney Paying Its Share In Anaheim

Posted: September 30, 2017

A few hours after the gates swing open at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, the cars are still pouring into the massive 10,241-space parking garage. They zoom into the six-story concrete structure, carloads of costumed kids, foreign tourists and graying baby boomers sporting Mickey Mouse ears, "Frozen" dresses and "Star Wars" backpacks. The cash pours in too: Each vehicle pays $20 to park at the Mickey & Friends facility, $35 for a preferred space close to the escalators and elevators. Even if the parking garage fills just half its spaces, it would still generate more

Haunted Mansion Gingerbread House Is Swarming With Creepy Crawlies

Posted: September 30, 2017

Tim Burton and The Haunted Mansion collide for this scary sweet gingerbread house at Disneyland. Houses made of cookie don't typically scream Halloween. In fact, they don't typically scream at all, typically filling out a cutesy Christmas tablescape. But at one of Disneyland's most haunted estates, scaring up a good time (especially around the holidays) comes with the territory, and nothing says "Season's Screamings!" quite like a creepy cookie creation. This year The Nightmare Before Christmas' buggy big baddie has been brought in to make sure one of the park's favorite Halloween
