Every Town USA

Author: Cal Jones
Posted: August 14, 2017

The final stop on my lovely tour of Disneyland, at least until "Star Wars Land" is completed, is the entrance to the entire park. Said to be inspired by Walt's hometown of Marceline, Missouri, "Main Street, U.S.A" is designed to look like the idealized center of a town at around 1910. One of the designers, Harper Goff, showed Walt some pictures of his childhood home in Colorado and Walt liked the look. Many of the town's features were incorporated into Main Street. The park opens to Main Street with the "Disneyland Railroad Train Station" on top of it. At the other end is "Sleeping

Local Horse Lover Is The Happiest Gal

Posted: August 14, 2017

Alexis Cole has grown up in the High Desert, graduating from Granite Hills High School in 2012. Describing herself as the typical "horse crazy girl," Cole says she has always been interested in horses. When she was three years old, her mother gave her riding lessons as a gift. After that, Cole says, "I was hooked." What better career for someone with a love of horses than working with and around them, and Cole set her sights high, seeking a job working with the horses at Disneyland. "I started my employment with Disney in April of last year as a stable attendant," Cole reports.

Do Not Tell Mickey The Yippies Are Coming Sunglasses After Dark The Untold Yippie Project Comes To New York City Stage

Posted: August 14, 2017

Who were the "Yippies"? They were the self-proclaimed "radical offspring of the hippie movement": members of the Youth International Party, which was formed in 1967. With their rule-breaking fashion sensibility, progressive ideas, and unapologetic affinity for drugs and free love, they became a scapegoat for the so-called "Establishment"- an insult to good, clean, wholesome USA values. But these young activists had a mission. They were upset that kids were being sent to die off in Vietnam, and frustrated by America's unrepentant focus on money over human rights. To these young men and women,

Disneyland Delish New Fancy Doughnuts

Posted: August 14, 2017

DEAR CHURROS, it has been a good long while since we've written, and for that we do apologize. Life has kept us busy, but your cinnamon sweetness, your easy hold-a-bility, and your notable soft-to-the-teeth-ness remains forever on our mind and in our heart. So this is just to say that we do adore you, and Dole whips, and those Mickey Ears cookies, and all of the goodies we can find up and down Main Street, U.S.A., and just off it, too (we know, we need to stroll to Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room for our Dole-based longings). This is all to say that the classic Disneyland Park treats, those

2 Special Train Engines Create Historic Moment For The Disneyland Railroad

Posted: August 14, 2017

The steam whistle blew and rounding the bend of the Disneyland Railroad in Frontierland after an 18-month closure, was not one, but two steam locomotives coupled together - a historic moment for the classic Disneyland attraction. Even more historic was the fact that the two 3-foot gauge engines (the same gauge as the Disneyland Railroad) - the Marie E and the Chloe - were not part of the rail line's regular complement of five steam engines. Rather, they were engines once owned by two of Walt Disney's legendary "nine old men" of animation - Ollie Johnston and Ward Kimball. "They're

Remembering Disneyland Wild Opening Day In 1955

Posted: August 6, 2017

Marty Sklar, the legendary Disney Imagineer who not only closely worked with Walt Disney for years, but also had a vital hand in shaping Disney theme parks as we know them, has died. He was 83 years old. The creative was an icon in the Disney community, known for having never missed an opening of the company's famous parks all over the world. He was even there for the 1955 opening of Disneyland, which was one of the most chaotic moments in the company's history. Thousands of people showed up with counterfeit tickets, turning a dreamy day into Walt's worst nightmare. At the time, Sklar

How These 3 Families Ended Up Working Together On Main Street Electrical Parade

Posted: August 6, 2017

Identical twin sisters, a father and son, and a mother and daughter all have one thing in common, they are all cast members associated with the current run of Disneyland's Main Street Electrical Parade. Twins The twin sisters, Hailey and Taylor Benson, started dancing at the age of three. Now in college, they decided to try out as dancers for the parade. "We auditioned, and both got the same thing," Hailey said, with Taylor nodding in agreement. Like many identical twins, they dress alike - and frequently finish each other's sentence. "I think they were like, they're

Disneyland Return Railroad And River Attractions

Posted: August 6, 2017

The building of a space port in a galaxy that happens to be located far, far away doesn't normally prevent an earthbound train from traveling the route it has run along for decades. The port is somewhere deep in the cosmos, light years from this planet, while the train tracks? They've been placed on terra firma, and the engine that toot-toots along them will never be impacted by what happens in space. There is an exception to this, however, and you can find it at Disneyland Park. The construction of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, the new land themed to the "Star Wars" universe, happened to be

There Are Rules To Obey When Going On A Disneyland Trip

Posted: August 5, 2017

We said we'd wait at least another decade before going back to Disneyland after the last exhausting visit, but there we were, only two years later, going back. Such a reversal is not without precedent. How many women, after giving birth, say they're never going to have another child, and then they go ahead and do it again anyway? Disneyland, like reproduction, is something that just has to be done. And it has to be done the right way. My wife is a trouper, and she'll go along with nearly anything to please her family. However, she wasn't buying into my Disneyland/ childbirth

Disney Imagineer Story

Posted: August 5, 2017

Martin A. "Marty" Sklar, a right-hand man of Walt Disney and central figure in the development and expansion of his company's theme parks around the world, has died. Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Brown confirmed Sklar's death for The Associated Press. He died Thursday at his Hollywood Hills home at age 83, a company statement says. No details were released on his cause of death. "Here you leave today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow and fantasy," Sklar said in 2005, reading from a plaque at the front of the park. "That says so much about what Walt intended here," Sklar

Railroad Engineers Ecstatic About New Route As Classic Ride Readies To Reopen

Posted: August 5, 2017

"All Aboard" will be heard again when the Disneyland Railroad opens Saturday, July 29, 2017 after a being shuttered for more than a year. Construction of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge meant the railroad would be closed while a new route was built around Frontierland for the classic opening day attraction. During that time, the rail line's engineers were busy keeping the steam-powered locomotives ready to run. "We'd be doing boiler washes on the boilers to keep them really clean, so they could be operational any time," said Craig Ludwick, an operating engineer for the Disneyland

Fantasmic Drops Old Favorites For New Stars

Posted: August 5, 2017

Disneyland faced a daunting challenge with the remake of the 25-year-old "Fantasmic" nighttime spectacular: How do you update a beloved modern classic without alienating its die-hard fans? The Anaheim theme park has succeeded with a retooled show that largely hews to the original story line with just a sprinkling of new characters and technological flourishes. For the uninitiated, "Fantasmic" projects animated videos onto 60-foot-wide water mist screens in the Rivers of America. The new version of the show adds video mapping technology to the existing colored fountains and
