Disneyland was dedicated during a special preview opening day on July 17, 1955. The public opening was July 18. The dedication aired on ABC at 4:30 p.m. July 17. Some details of the opening:

Park attendance: 6,000 guests were invited for the special preview opening, but an additional 22,000 showed up with counterfeit tickets, making for a total of 28,000 guests that day.

Temperature: 101 degrees

Cast characters at opening ceremonies: Characters did not roam Disneyland in the 1950s, but for the preview day, character costumes were borrowed from the Ice Capades, which produced Disney on Ice. They included:
Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse
Donald Duck, Pluto
Dumbo, Chip 'n' Dale
Peter Pan, Wendy, Captain Hook
Cinderella, Fairy Godmother, Prince Charming, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Alice, Mad Hatter, White Rabbit, the March Hare
Annie Oakley and Aunt Jemima.

Celebrities at opening ceremonies:
Art Linkletter
Bob Cummings
Ronald Reagan
Frank Sinatra
Jerry Lewis
Sammy Davis Jr.
Danny Thomas
Debbie Reynolds
Eddie Fisher
Thurl Ravenscroft
Buddy Ebsen
Gale Storm
Julie Bishop
Irene Dunn

California Gov. Goodwin J. Knight
Dixieland jazz band Firehouse Five plus Two
Fess Parker, leading the opening parade on horseback as Davy Crockett

Rides and attractions:
Santa Fe and Disneyland Railroad (now simply Disneyland Railroad)
Horse-drawn streetcars, fire wagon, surreys, stagecoaches
Mule pack train
Main Street Cinema
King Arthur Carousel
Peter Pan's Flight
Snow White's Adventures (now Snow White's Scary Adventures)
Mr. Toad's Wild Ride
Mad Tea Party
Canal Boats of the World
Jungle Cruise

Glitches: Due to a local plumbers' strike, many of the water fountains were dry. The asphalt that had been poured in the morning was still soft, so ladies wearing high heels sunk in. There was a gas leak in Fantasyland, so park operators closed Fantasyland, and nearby Adventureland and Frontierland, for the afternoon.

Ticket price in 1955: Admission was $1. Rides and attractions were a separate fee via individual tickets. Three months after the park opened, books of tickets were available; the tickets were labeled "A" to "C." Today's tickets: $96 adults and $90 children ages 3-9.

Disney films released in 1955: "Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier," "Lady and the Tramp" and "The Littlest Outlaw."
