Since Disneyland announced it would debut its 60th anniversary fireworks show, parade and diamond-decorated castle on May 22, I have been eagerly awaiting the day like a little kid making her first visit to the park.

I purposely haven't been to Disneyland since mid-March, to help fuel the anticipation and excitement.

Finally, it's less than three weeks away. With every day, I get more excited.

And there's a bonus: The park is open 24 hours, starting at 6 a.m. May 22. This is a great way to get your money's worth on a near $100 admission for adults.

Walt Disney first welcomed "all who come to this happy place" on July 17, 1955, when the park opened to invited guests and media. The park - built in a year on 160 acres of orange groves - had a less than stellar debut, starting with double the invited guests turning out. It was so hot that day, that the fresh asphalt was softening under guests' feet and water fountains didn't work.

Obviously, the bad reviews didn't keep people away. Sixty years later, the theme park continues to thrive. Even with admission as high as it is, Disney has reported that attendance has been up.

I had hoped there would be a new ride unveiled with the anniversary. There has been talk that a new Star Wars attraction is coming, and hopefully, Disneyland will make an official announcement soon.

In the meantime, Peter Pan's Flight and Matterhorn will be reopening just in time for the 24-hour event. Both have been closed for several months for refurbishment, which includes new special effects for each and a new yeti for the Matterhorn.

But what I'm most looking forward to will come with nightfall.

The new "Paint the Night Parade" - inspired by the Electrical Parade - promises a "state-of-the-art nighttime parade that combines innovative floats, awe-inspiring costumes and special effects, and more than 1.5 million LED lights illuminating Main Street, U.S.A. like you've never seen it before."

The new "Disneyland Forever Fireworks Spectacular" will feature the largest installation of projection mapping technology in a Disney park and special effects that will turn Main Street, U.S.A. and other park areas into a "magical canvas." The pyrotechnics will transport guests to the London skyline of Peter Pan, along with other dream-like settings, officials state.

California Adventure isn't being left out of the celebration. Also open 24 hours on May 22, the park will unveil a new World of Color water show with actor Neil Patrick Harris narrating the story of Walt Disney and the Happiest Place on Earth.
