Space Mountain is one of the most thrilling attractions at Disneyland. So in 2009, Disney Imagineers decided to make it more thrilling for Halloween by turning it into Ghost Galaxy.

Spooky sounds emanate from the building as you walk up the entrance ramp. At night, there are images of a ghost projected onto the building for all to see, warning you that things in space are different now.

The changes are mostly cosmetic, as the physical ride is still the same. But once you board your rocket and depart the station, things are noticeably different. The first lift has a different look, and the sound is a lot spookier onboard the rocket.

As you ascend the second lift, that's when you get a good look at the ghost haunting the ride. A fiery skeleton appears at the top, and as you near the top of the second lift, he roars and lightning surrounds you.

Up the final lift, the creature appears in front of you as you begin your high-speed race down the track in the dark.

Throughout the ride there are fleeting glimpses of the scary creature as he tries to "capture" you and scare you as you are violating his "space."

Finally, you speed into the re-entry tunnel, which also has a different look with more eerie lightning and other effects. But then you land, safe and sound, back at the station, probably ready to get in line and ride again - though the queue is usually quite long for the stand-by line.

An Imagineer's Review

The use of new advancements in digital projection technology has allowed Disney to upgrade several of its attractions, and the Ghost Galaxy upgrade to Space Mountain is one of those upgrades, and a good one at that.

Disneyland has increased its seasonal offerings, in particular during the Halloween season - and this is a good one. It turns the classic Space Mountain ride into a fun, eerie and spooky romp through Disney's version of space flight.

The Ghost Galaxy version of Space Mountain generally is offered from mid-September through Halloween.

Be warned: Some children might be scared of this ride, as it is meant to scare. But it is Disney, so don't expect anything that bad and, of course, there's a happy ending: You return safely.

My grade for this attraction: A.
