Disneyland will replace the free FastPass system with a paid Lightning Lane option and begin charging for premium front-of-the-line access on some individual attractions as the Anaheim theme park launches its new Disney Genie mobile app.

The new Disney Genie service will debut this fall as part of the Disneyland and Walt Disney World mobile apps as a replacement for the retiring FastPass and MaxPass line-cutting options.

Disney Genie will help Disneyland and Disney World visitors make customized itineraries geared to their interests at the best times and in the most optimized order. Just tell Disney Genie what you want to do and the app will evaluate millions of options to create the best itinerary. Change your mind and Genie will re-optimize your day. If you’re undecided, Genie will offer park navigation tips, recommend rides and help make dining reservations.

Disney’s new multi-tiered personal assistant service will be divided into three parts — the free Disney Genie option, paid Disney Genie+ alternative and upcharge Lightning Lane Select Experiences.

The free Disney Genie service will include personalized itinerary planning, dynamically updated tip boards, forecast attraction wait times, attraction virtual queue access, mobile food ordering recommendations, restaurant wait lists, check-ins and reservations and a virtual assistant that can answer theme park queries.

The free service will build personalized itineraries that offer advice on how to reduce attraction wait times and a tip board that displays each visitor’s favorite rides, restaurants and entertainment at a glance. The dynamic itinerary can change in real time if it rains, a ride breaks down or your kid needs a nap. A wait time forecaster will recommend the best times during the day to ride an attraction using Disneyland’s industrial engineering data.

The $20 Disney Genie+ is essentially identical to the $20 MaxPass that Disneyland and DCA have offered since 2017. MaxPass is a paid version of the free FastPass that offers the ease and convenience of making FastPass selections via the Disneyland app.

More than 15 attractions at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure will be part of the Genie+ service. Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder Mountain and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run will be included in Genie+ — with additional attractions to be announced at a later date.

Visitors will be able to book one attraction at a time using Genie+ — just like MaxPlus. The paid service includes unlimited PhotoPass downloads at Disneyland.

Disney Genie+ can be pre-purchased or paid for on the day visitors arrive at the park.

The upcharge Lightning Lane Select Experiences will allow visitors to pay for FastPass-like access to one or two individual rides per day and schedule a return time for each individual attraction. Visitors using Lightning Lane Select cannot choose the same attraction twice.

The Lightning Lane Select attractions will not be part of the Disney Genie+ collection of rides. DCA’s Radiator Springs Racers will be among the Lightning Lane Select attractions — with additional attractions to be announced at a later date

Genie+ and Lightning Select are sold separately and can be purchased together, individually or not at all.

Disney has not announced the cost for Lightning Lane Select, but Disneyland Paris is charging $9.50 to $17.50 per ride for a similar service called Disney Premier Access.

FastPass lanes in the parks will be converted to Lightning Lanes that will be used for visitors with either Genie+ or Lightning Select passes. FastPass paper ticket kiosks will be removed from Disneyland and DCA.

All Disneyland attractions will continue to have standby queues — unless the ride is using a virtual queue like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure. Standby and virtual queue access will continue to be available at no additional cost.

At Disney World, visitors staying at a Disney hotel will be able to make Genie+ selections starting at 7 a.m. each day and purchase individual Lightning Select passes at park opening time. Disneyland has not announced if visitors staying at Disney hotels will have similar perks.

Disneyland and DCA visitors can make Genie+ selections and purchase individual Lightning Select passes once they are inside the parks.

The new Disney Genie multi-tiered service will enable theme park visitors to more easily and efficiently navigate everything Disneyland and Walt Disney World have to offer, Disney CEO Bob Chapek said on a recent quarterly investor call.

“The goal of Disney Genie, which will appear in a user-friendly app, is to create a better, more personalized and customized experience for guests, putting them in control and providing even greater flexibility and choice,” Chapek said on the call. “They’ll be able to spend less time waiting in line and figuring out what attractions or dining options are available and more time having fun.”

Disney Genie blends consumer preferences and industrial engineering data on theme park operations to make suggestions on the fly that will improve the visitor experience and lead to substantial commercial opportunities, according to Chapek.

Chapek described Disney Genie as Disney World’s MyMagic+ program “on steroids.”

Disney World’s MyMagic+ is similar to the Disneyland app with the smartphone applications designed to work in concert with digital services like theme park ticketing, mobile food ordering, advance dining reservations, attraction virtual queues, online hotel check-ins and digital hotel keys.

The Disney Genie app was unveiled during the D23 Expo in August 2019 at the Anaheim Convention Center. At the time, Disney Genie was set to debut in late 2020 — but then the COVID-19 pandemic hit and the launch of the app was pushed back.

Initially, Disney Genie was intended only for Disney World, but now Disneyland will be getting the app as well.
