The famed “kiss goodnight” that the “Fantasmic” and “World of Color” nighttime spectaculars reliably delivered on a nightly basis at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure continue to remain dark and are not expected to return until 2022.

“Fantasmic” and “World of Color” went into hibernation during the 13-month coronavirus closures of the Anaheim theme parks and have shown few signs of life in the nearly five months since Disneyland and DCA reopened in late April.

The COVID-19 pandemic put fireworks, nighttime spectaculars, parades and live shows on hold during the phased reopening of Disneyland and Disney California Adventure due to the large crowds they attract. Since the parks returned, Disneyland has brought back fireworks in time for the Fourth of July and resumed the first parade as part of DCA’s Oogie Boogie Bash in early September.

Recent construction work has given Mouseheads hope the popular “Fantasmic” and “World of Color” nighttime spectaculars could be returning soon to the parks.

Extensive fountain refurbishment work is currently underway on “Fantasmic” at Disneyland and “World of Color” at DCA. The new Pelican’s Landing expanded seating area overlooking the Rivers of America that is expected to open later this year at Disneyland may also serve as a premium viewing location when “Fantasmic” returns.

Disneyland has also sprinkled a little pixie dust on two key elements of the “Fantasmic” show.

The Mark Twain Riverboat just finished a short refurbishment with the Sailing Ship Columbia now out of commission for some TLC. Back in June, Disneyland refurbished the “Fantasmic” rigging and stunt pads used in the pirate battle scene on the Columbia.

When will “Fantasmic” and “World of Color” return?

Don’t be surprised if “Fantasmic” remains dark until next spring. Expect “Fantasmic” to be back in full swing by May 2022 in time for the 30th anniversary of the nighttime spectacular. Disneyland never misses a chance to celebrate a significant milestone.

Rebooting “Fantasmic” would require Disneyland to hire, train and rehearse a new cast. By design, “World of Color” doesn’t face the same hurdles since the show has no live performers.

Don’t expect to see “World of Color” return to DCA until 2022 either. Oogie Boogie Bash is taking place at DCA through Halloween without the “World of Color: Villainous” show and there was no mention of “World of Color: Season of Light” for the upcoming Christmas holiday season that runs through early January.

Disney World is reopening a pair of waterfront spectacular venues on Oct. 1 as part of the 50th anniversary celebration at the Florida theme park resort.

The new “Harmonious” show on Epcot’s World Showcase Lagoon is billed as the largest nighttime spectacular ever created for a Disney park. The new “KiteTails” daytime show coming to the Discovery River Amphitheater at Disney’s Animal Kingdom combines kites pulled by personal watercraft with animal puppets on shore.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios won’t bring back the East Coast version of “Fantasmic” in time for the 50th anniversary celebration — with the amphitheater’s lagoon drained in late August.

Tokyo DisneySea had planned to end the nearly decade-long run of “Fantasmic” in March 2020 right around the time the COVID-19 pandemic began sweeping across the world.
