Disneyland's annual unofficial Gay Days celebration is scheduled this year to run Friday, Oct. 5, to Sunday, Oct. 7, in and around the Anaheim resort.

This is the 21st year of the event, during which organizer Eddie Shapiro said people attend the theme parks from around the world, wearing red T-shirts to show their solidarity.

Disneyland does not encourage or discourage events organized by outside groups, and it will be held alongside regular visitors.

Shapiro said there's a party-like atmosphere on those days and some people who might feel concerned about being outwardly gay elsewhere can be comfortable.

"We are an actual majority in the parks on those days," Shapiro said. "People feel safe to be themselves during those days."

He said he's already been sending preordered T-shirts for the event to places as far away as Idaho, Hawaii, Pennsylvania and Australia.

Straight people are also invited to participate. According to Shapiro, Disneyland has estimated attendees at more than 30,000 annually.

"People say, "Can I come? I just want to show support,' and we say, "Of course,'" Shapiro said.
