Rafts were making the journey with visitors again from the mainland at Disneyland to Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island.

The island was closed in early 2016 as the park worked on shortening the route for the Rivers of America in Frontierland to make room for the 14-acre "Star Wars" land project.

In May of 2017, the river was refilled with water, and final preparation began to reopen the island.

With work complete, Disneyland opened it Friday, June 16, including a visit by Captain Jack Sparrow.

Much of the attractions on the island remain the same including "Dead Man's Grotto," the barrel and swaying suspension bridge, and the mill.

Fort Wilderness is still at the north end of the island, but remains closed to visitors as it is now used as a dressing room and break area for the cast and crew of the night time river show "Fantasmic!"

The northern part of the island is still off limits to visitors, but elements on that end will be visible to passengers on the Mark Twain Riverboat or the Sailing Ship Columbia when they begin plying the Rivers of America waterway at the end of July.

The Davy Crockett Canoes, propelled by visitors using oars, will also be able to see the rest of the Rivers of America scenery then, too.

Because of the shortened river route, previous scenes not visible will now be visible from the island. One of those scenes is the Native American Village, with its Shaman weaving his tales near the far shore.

Parts of the new route for the Disneyland Railroad will be visible as well, when it returns to the rails July 29.

During the more than year-long closure, Disneyland's Entertainment Division worked on updating its night-time river show. The stage on the island went through a long refurbishment that added some new scenery, some of which hides new show elements.

The show is scheduled to return July 17, Disneyland's birthday.
