Walt Disney Imagineering has jammed so many historical nods and hidden Easter Eggs into Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway that the creative team behind the new trackless dark ride figured why not toss in a second story line as well.

“This attraction actually has a B story,” Walt Disney Imagineering’s Kevin Rafferty said. “First one ever that has a B story in addition to the A story. It’s very clear and it’s very fun.”

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway trackless dark ride debuts March 4 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida and in Mickey’s Toontown at Disneyland in 2022.

The first theme park ride ever dedicated to Mickey Mouse will take riders on a chaotic journey aboard a runaway train that encounters hurricanes, waterfalls and stampeding bulls.

The secondary story in Runaway Railway will be woven into the primary tale inspired by the newest generation of Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts that unfolds throughout the dark ride.

“Everybody will see it,” Rafferty said during an interview at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. “It’s subtle, but you will see it.”

As an executive creative director at Imagineering, Rafferty oversees work on Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway.

“As the show writer, I’m actually really proud to say that it has a beginning, middle and end and a story sequence,” Rafferty said.

Rafferty has helped conceive, design and oversee the creation of a number of Disney attractions including Radiator Springs Racers, Toy Story Midway Mania, Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Mickey’s Philharmagic and Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage.

Runaway Railway is filled with subtle references and nods to Mickey Mouse’s 90-year-plus history, according to Rafferty.

“This is the kind of attraction that there’s so much going on,” Rafferty said. “Every scene is so jam packed. It’s 10 pounds of potatoes in a five-pound bag.”

Rafferty expects it will take theme park visitors multiple rides on Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway to catch all the hidden Easter Eggs.

“There’s so much to see,” Rafferty said. “So many nods to such great stuff that hearkens back to the Disney studio and little nods to different things, even Imagineering. It’s going to take you many, many rides through to actually see everything. And you probably won’t even then.”
