Haunted Mansion Will Still Be Under Construction When It Reopens

The long closure of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion is nearing an end, but construction won’t be done when the ride reopens, park officials confirmed. Instead, a virtual queue system will be used to usher guests into the spooky attraction as a major renovation of the area continues.

In January, the Haunted Mansion closed for the ambitious project. The exterior queue has been ripped up, leaving the front of the attraction unrecognizable and tucked away behind construction walls. When the outdoor queue reopens, it will be a completely new experience, including some yet-to-be-announced theming elements. (Disney World’s Haunted Mansion queue features a number of interactive tombstones.)

Along with a new queue, the attraction is getting its own gift shop themed to Madame Leota’s carriage house.

The overhaul has created a construction morass, sometimes obstructing walkways as work continues on Haunted Mansion and next-door Critter Country. While Haunted Mansion, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh are all closed, Pirates of the Caribbean was added to Genie+, necessitating an extended queue that is also causing traffic jams in the area.

A marquee ride reopening will be a welcome release of the New Orleans Square pressure valve. Disneyland officials confirmed a general timeline with SFGATE, saying the attraction will reopen “in time for the fall season.” That leaves a pretty big window: the “fall” Halloween season runs from Aug. 25 to Oct. 31 at the Disneyland Resort this year.

When it does reopen, Haunted Mansion will be in its Haunted Mansion Holiday configuration, a “Nightmare Before Christmas” overlay that lasts from Halloween through the holidays.

Because of continuing “work on the surrounding area,” guests won’t be able to walk up and stand in line, a Disneyland spokesperson said. They’ll need to use the Disneyland app at a certain time each day to join a virtual line. When it’s their turn to ride, the app will let them know. The exact protocol hasn’t been announced yet, so Disneyland guests will need to wait for more information as the reopening nears.
