Although the revamp of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion isn’t complete, the beloved attraction is open for the first time since January. Greeting guests are various new features and improvements plus the return of one absolutely delightful historical detail.

During the Haunted Mansion’s Monday reopening, eagle-eyed visitors noticed the very special bat near the beginning of the ride: Immediately after passing the ghoul trying to break out of its coffin, to the right, riders see a bat with glowing red eyes in a cage with two blood-filled wine glasses inside. The literal vampire bat is packaged up like a present, complete with a bow and a gift tag that reads “To: Grandpa Marc.”

The vampire bat is the creation of legendary Disney animator and Imagineer Marc Davis, who worked on everything from the Enchanted Tiki Room to Pirates of the Caribbean. He also drafted concept art for the Haunted Mansion, one of the last projects Walt Disney worked on before his death in 1966.

There was a rift between Imagineers throughout the ride’s conception, with some advocating for a silly attraction and others angling for a true haunted house. Eventually, they decided to split the difference, mixing a few scary scenes with gags. Many of the scariest pieces of concept art went by the wayside, but recently, some, like the Candle Man, have been revived and tucked into the ride anew, including Davis’ caged vampire bat.

This isn’t the bat’s first appearance in the ride, although perhaps this addition will be a bit more permanent; last February, it was spotted next to the armchair in the endless hallway, but sometime not long after, it disappeared.

Plenty of other changes await the foolish mortals headed to the Haunted Mansion. The front queue now features a new Lightning Lane area, set off to the side from the rest of the queue to create less of a bottleneck.

A fountain that used to sit in New Orleans Square has also been relocated to the front grass of the mansion. The fountain’s prior home is still under construction: Sometime in the future, there will be an outdoor queue with new Haunted Mansion touches. To the right of the attraction, a dedicated gift shop is also still in the works.

Because of ongoing construction, the Haunted Mansion has no standby line; only ticket holders who get a return time via a virtual queue can ride the attraction. You can join the virtual queue at either 7 a.m. or noon each day via the Disneyland app.
