No one said magic would be easy. Still, 50 years later, what almost no one remembers is the opening day that stumbled like Dumbo dancing in leg irons.
When the widely anticipated, but hardly completed, Disneyland opened its doors on July 17, 1955, so eager was the world to share Walt Disney's dream that instead of 6,000 invited guests, more than 28,000 people - most

Was a time when Tomorrow was big. Back in the '60s and '70s, despite-or perhaps because of-Vietnam and nuclear missiles, Tomorrow was a good place to be. They even gave it a name: Tomorrowland. Unlike the rest of Disneyland's fluff, Tomorrowland had the feel of an exhibit, a place where we learned that the future would burst with helpful robots, time-saving products,

Disneyland is always a feast for the senses--and a trial for the feet. Truly observant folks can get a tantalizing glimpse of a charming inside joke: the world of the Hidden Mickeys.
Here and there in the park, sly Disney imagineers have tucked a graphic symbol of their boss's greatest achievement: three adjoining circles that together spell M-I-C-K-E-Y.

If Imagineers David Mumford and Bruce Gordon have gained fame among Disney fans, it may be because they haven't forgotten their roots. Gordon spent his childhood building Disneyland models in his garage and went on to become a show producer on the park's new Autopia. Mumford, meanwhile, filled his early years with Disney memorabilia and worked his way up to his current

The First Hint that my mission will be daunting: I tell the cast member in Guest Relations the title of the article I'm researching, and she starts to giggle. Disneyland in a day? Who am I kidding? "It might be a little hard," she says, handing me my tickets, "to do it all in a day."
Disneyland has its own special feel, and nostalgia is only part of it. Yes, it's

With rocket ships zooming overhead, Marsha Berlo shaded her eyes from the midday sun and wondered how long she would have to wait to step into the future.
“It won 't be the 21st century when we get to the front,” Berlo said from the rear of a three-hour line. “It 'll just feel like it.”

Two boys vacationing at Disneyland sprinted to Space Mountain when the park opened Wednesday morning, hoping to be first in line.
But the escalator leading to their favorite roller coaster was on fire.
The English boys were told the ride, being worked on as part of Tomorrowland improvements, would be down for an hour.
''Ah, man!'' yelled Matthew Hickson, 14.

But I wanted more of Disney's new Indiana Jones Adventure ride.
So I climbed aboard again. And again. And again.
And again. And again. And again.
And again.
Eight times altogether.
And why not?
At age 48, I was in Disneyland. Alone. I was vacationing for the first time without my wife, without kids, without anyone else. My time was my own. The choices

From Glendale Disneyland's new Tomorrowland won't open until May 1998, but in a drab gray and beige industrial building in Glendale the project already is mostly complete.
The building is part of Walt Disney Co.'s Imagineering complex, where ideas are put to paper and then crafted into models of the company's future endeavors. The model for the rebuilt Tomorrowland

A major upgrade to chilled-water systems at Disneyland is improving cooling capacity, increasing flexibility and reducing energy costs at the world-famous Southern California theme park. The project included updating equipment in the 85-acre park's two 30-year old chiller plants and drawing together the two formerly separate plants to allow load sharing.

When Disneyland opened, "1986 sounded very futuristic," said Tony Baxter, senior vice president-creative development for Disney's imagineering

Disneyland, a monument to childhood, is also a test of how well you've grown up. Your first visit is guaranteed to be interesting, just as the first time you drive a car, have sex or spend a night by yourself is filled with wonder. But by the tenth or hundredth time you do it, amazement will elude you unless you apply an adult imagination to the experience.

Once upon a time in a popular tourist destination called the Magic Kingdom, there lived some very prosperous characters. They were happy all the time (except for Grumpy, but it was his job to be that way). They produced souvenirs, cartoons and movies that were the delight of families around the world. But one day a great disenchantment fell over the kingdom, for the magic

Part of the magic of the Magic Kingdom, of course, is that despite the slings and arrows peppering the outside world, it somehow remains as seemingly immutable as one of Aristotle's First Causes, or Walt's immortal mouse, whose 60th birthday the park-itself pushing a healthy 33-is celebrating this year from March 19 through September 8 with a new Mickey at the Movies

As you and 39 companions strap into your bucket seats, your pilot, Rex the robot, casually informs you that this is also his first flight aboard the Starspeeder 3000 which helps explain the ensuing 4 1/2-minutes misadventure. Rex takes a wrong turn and Darth Vader's Death Star looms on the horizon. What began as a vacation getaway to the Moon of Endor, winds up in a fight
The two droids in the second part of the queue area known as the maintenance bay are dressed-up creations using the mechanical bodies of the Geese from "America Sings."
If you look carefully as the Star Tours vehicle takes a wrong turn and careens wildly through a maintenance bay, you can see the old "Mighty Microscope" from Adventures through Inner Space in the background.
The voice of the trainee pilot REX is that of Paul Rubens, better known as Pee-Wee Herman.
In the final scene when the Starspeeder 3000 comes screeching to a halt, the guy who dives behind the desk, then re-emerges looks like George Lucas.
Statistics:
Construction Start Date: September 3, 1985
Grand Opening: January 9, 1986

The flight simulator has 6 degrees of motion
One of the annoucements in the pre show area is :
"Departing Endor passenger, Sacul, Mr. Egroeg Sacul, please see the Star Tours agent at gate number 3. Mr. Morrow, Mr. Tom Morrow, please check with a Star Tours agent at gate number 4."
If you spell Egreog Sacul backwards it is George Lucus
During the design this attraction was called Star Rides
R2D2 and C3PO are the actual droids from the Star Wars movie.
