Here Is When Disneyland Has To Retire Autopias Gas Engines

Disneyland is up against a deadline to retire Autopia’s gas-powered engines, according to Climate Colored Goggles, which obtained the information through a California Public Records Act request.

In May, Disneyland officials confirmed to KTLA that the resort has an agreement with the Air Resources Board to retire Autopia’s gas engines in early 2027.

Work is underway on the design, engineering and testing of a fully electric ride vehicle prototype, with additional details expected soon, according to resort officials.

The California Air Resources Board issued Disney a notice of violation in early 2024, alleging that Autopia’s gas engines were out of compliance with state emissions rules.

Disney had voluntarily disclosed that the Honda-built engines were not properly certified. As part of a settlement, Disney paid a $56,250 penalty and agreed to overhaul the attraction, according to the records.

“Honda bears at least some responsibility for the mishap. The document says Honda ‘failed to certify’ the engines, seemingly due to an ‘administrative error.’ In August 2023, Honda sent Disney a notification. Soon after, Disney ‘communicated the newly learned information’ to the Air Resources Board, “the publication reported.

The compliance plan obtained through the records request outlines a 30-month deadline for retiring Autopia’s gas cars. The settlement was finalized on Aug. 1, 2024, which means the attraction, in its current form, must close by Feb. 1, 2027, according to Climate Colored Goggles.

The classic attraction, a favorite among young guests who get to experience driving for the first time, is as old as Disneyland itself, debuting with the park in 1955.

Changes have come to the famed attraction; for example, it was renamed the Fantasyland Autopia and later the “Rescue Rangers Raceway” during the earlier days of Disneyland, but this is the first time Disneyland will move away from gas-powered vehicles.

The attraction’s closing and reopening dates haven’t been announced. Disneyland first announced plans to “electrify” Autopia in 2024.
