After 6 Hour Meeting Disneyland Can Move Forward With Sweeping Expansion

After a six-hour meeting that included speeches from Disneyland’s president, Disney cast members and a significant number of detractors voicing their concerns, Disneyland Forward has hit a milestone in its progress. The company received approval from the Anaheim Planning Commission to move the proposed expansion to the next round of approvals from the Anaheim City Council. That vote is scheduled for April 16, and Deadline reports that Disneyland is hoping to have the whole project approved this year.

The 10-year expansion of the Disneyland Resort will require a multi-billion dollar investment by the company, and will include a massive theme park expansion and new hotels. In the plan, Disney teased the construction of lands themed to “Frozen,” “Peter Pan,” “Tangled,” “Zootopia,” “Tron” and “Toy Story.” But more broadly, the plan is suggesting a more integrated experience, with better transportation systems, hotels and parks blending together, and an expanded Downtown Disney shopping and dining area that resembles Disney Springs at Walt Disney World.

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced recently that Pandora, the “Avatar”-themed land in Disney’s Animal Kingdom park in Orlando, would be one of the lands implemented in the expansion. Some of the concept art accompanying the Disneyland Forward proposal also included renderings of a long-gone attraction from the 1960s that could be making a comeback.

Disneyland Forward hinges on the city loosening its zoning restrictions for areas around the Disneyland Resort. Existing zoning regulations for the areas that would include new lands, shopping, dining and hotels currently limit what can be built on that land.

According to the Disneyland Forward website, the current “‘traditional’ district/zone approach does not allow for the diverse, integrated experiences theme park visitors now seek, severely limiting Disney’s ability to continue investing in Anaheim.”

If the project clears all its hurdles, it could bring new lands like World of Frozen and Zootopia to the Anaheim parks.
