Another major closure is hitting a part of Disneyland that’s been overtaken by construction this year.
On Monday, Disney announced that Critter Country will temporarily shutter on May 1. The closure makes way for a complete redo of the Briar Patch, a Splash Mountain-themed gift shop that needs a renovation due to the ride's closure.
The new shop will be called Ray’s Berets to pair with Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, “The Princess and the Frog” retheme of Splash Mountain. The store will sell “headwear, apparel, accessories, toys and more with firefly Raymond and his firefly kin in the coziest cabin in Critter Country,” Disney Parks said in a press release. In addition, a new store called Louis’ Critter Club, located to the left of Pooh Corner, will sell ''apparel, accessories, home decor and more featuring some of your favorite critters and Princess Tiana.''
This project will only add to the construction chaos in that corner of the park. Haunted Mansion is closed indefinitely while the queue is completely redone and a gift shop is added. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is scaffolded off as the overhaul continues, and Disney has yet to announce when either attraction will reopen. Tall fences currently obscure construction from Haunted Mansion down to Pooh Corner, including blocking much of the walkway around the area.
There have been questions swirling for some time about the fate of Critter Country. Because “The Princess and the Frog” is set in New Orleans, and the attraction is adjacent to New Orleans Square, Critter Country now seems quite slim with the closure of Splash Mountain. But this renovation solidifies the continued existence of the land.
A spokesperson for Disney confirmed that the Hungry Bear restaurant will remain open during construction. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh will be closed, as will the merchandise and treat shop Pooh Corner, but both will reopen with the land. There is no tentative reopening date for Critter Country.
