Why Disneyland Is Opening A Water Ride At The Start Of The Winter Holiday Season

Disneyland is tossing out the theme park rule book as the year-round vacation destination prepares to kick off the winter holiday season with the debut of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure rather than open the new water ride at the start of summer when visitors want to get wet.

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will officially open to the general public on Nov. 15 the same day the Anaheim theme park kicks off the Christmas holiday season.

Why would Disneyland open a water ride at the same time fake snow is falling on Main Street U.S.A.?

A big reason for Disneyland’s winter holiday kickoff of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure has to do with the construction timeline of its sister attraction at the Magic Kingdom.

Walt Disney Imagineering has been developing a “Princess and the Frog” backstory for Splash Mountain since 2019.

Walt Disney World closed Splash Mountain in January 2023 at the Magic Kingdom and opened Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in June 2024.

Disneyland construction was purposely scheduled to lag behind the Magic Kingdom by about four months so Imagineering could work on both projects simultaneously.

As a result, Disneyland’s Splash Mountain closed in May 2023 and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will start Magic Keyholder previews next week on Monday, Oct. 21.

Opening Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in late 2024 will also allow Disneyland to promote the new attraction during the park’s 70th anniversary celebration in 2025 along with the return of the Paint the Night parade.

Most theme parks close or scale back water attractions in the winter months.

Disney California Adventure often shutters Grizzly River Rapids for seasonal refurbishment between January and March when most visitors don’t want to get soaked anyway.

Six Flags Magic Mountain typically closes Roaring Rapids for the winter season after Fright Fest and reopens the white-water river rafting ride in the spring.

Knott’s Berry Farm typically conducts annual refurbishments on Calico River Rapids and Timber Mountain Log Ride during the colder winter months.

SeaWorld San Diego keeps Journey to Atlantis and Shipwreck Rapids open throughout the winter.

The Knott’s Soak City, Six Flags Hurricane Harbor and Legoland water parks tend to close around Labor Day Weekend the traditional end of summer. September and October can be among the warmest months of the year in Southern California and the water parks occasionally stay open on weekends during those months.

Water parks trim back operations after Labor Day for two similar reasons: Their core audience and youthful workforce are back in school.
