Disneyland Opens Highly Anticipated Haunted Mansion Add On

It’s a good month for Haunted Mansion fans. First, the new Disney Treasure cruise ship launched, and with it, the on-board Haunted Mansion Parlor the first cocktail bar inspired by the classic 1969 ride (where drinks come with a real “death certificate”). Then on Monday, Disneyland opened the highly anticipated Haunted Mansion store ahead of its expected 2025 reveal.

Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond, the first standalone gift shop fully dedicated to Haunted Mansion and “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” unexpectedly opened on Dec. 23. Located at the ride’s exit, the store is designed as an old carriage house, a natural complement to the New Orleans sea captain’s home that houses the attraction.

The store takes inspiration from the ride’s seance room, where Madame Leota “[calls] in the spirits, wherever they’re at” using a crystal ball and musical instruments. According to a Disneyland news release shared with SFGATE, Leota’s original chandelier from the ride is in the shop, along with a portrait of Leota Toombs, the Disney Imagineer who provided the inspiration for Madame Leota, and a bat lamp previously in the gift shop Le Bat en Rouge (now the “Princess and the Frog”-themed Eudora’s Chic Boutique).

While the Disney Parks Blog originally reported last year that the store would open “sometime in 2024,” the park had given no timeline updates. Speculation among Haunted Mansion fans was that the store would probably open alongside the non-holiday version of the ride in January.

In its first iteration, that area would have been the Museum of the Weird, a walk-through attraction at the end of Haunted Mansion to house everything deemed too scary for the ride itself. Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond is part of the huge Haunted Mansion overhaul that closed the attraction from January to July of this year. When it reopened in July, it opened with the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay, complete with a massive animatronic gingerbread zombie. Even then, construction wasn’t complete; the ride operated on a virtual queue lottery system until the new, highly themed physical queue opened in November.

Haunted Mansion Holiday closes for the season on Jan. 6, 2025. The original Haunted Mansion reopens on Jan. 18, the first time the non-holiday version of the attraction will be open since August 2023.
