After backlash from hawkeyed Disney fans, Disneyland has removed a piece of artwork rumored to have been created by generative artificial intelligence.
Disneyland recently opened its highly anticipated add-on to the Haunted Mansion Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond, a stand-alone gift shop near the ride. Even better, in a “Nightmare Before Christmas” miracle, the team opened the new shop on Dec. 23, before the holiday season ended, instead of its expected opening in early 2025.
But by Christmas Eve, Disney fans noticed an unusual print of a ghost bride perched above one of the shop’s shelves. The print had some odd details consistent with AI artwork.
In the ghost bride print, the ceiling, candleholders and a double staircase with muddy railings all appeared slightly irregular. Fans quickly spotted the print available on a platform where artists directly sell their creations, Redbubble, from seller yourfavdraw, starting at $19.25 for the smallest size.
The online backlash was swift and widespread, and shortly after, fans noticed the park had quietly removed the artwork from the store. Because the shop pre-opened, some pieces are serving as placeholders for permanent fixtures, according to Disneyland officials.
The shop now features a portrait of a new bride who some suspect, based on upcoming merchandise, will join the ghostly cast of characters in Haunted Mansion when the ride reopens later this month.
After the holiday season, Disney temporarily closed the Haunted Mansion to revert from the “Nightmare Before Christmas” decor to its original form. It is scheduled to reopen Jan. 18.
