Disneyland will offer a nod to its past with a new menu lineup that pays tribute to Fantasyland’s Captain Hook’s Galley, Tomorrowland’s Space Place, Adventureland’s Tahitian Terrace and Frontierland’s Casa de Fritos during the Anaheim theme park’s big birthday bash.
Disneyland kicks off its 70th anniversary celebration on Friday, May 16 with a new food and beverage lineup that includes 13 nostalgic menu items.
Disneyland showcased the throwback treats and eats during a media preview of the 70th anniversary celebration on Tuesday, May 13.
Let’s take a closer look at the nostalgic items on the menu at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during the anniversary party.
1) Grilled Tahitian Ribs
Bengal Barbecue
Served with white rice and pineapple slaw
The rib platter pays tribute to the Tahitian Terrace that served a menu of South Sea Island foods and offered Polynesian entertainment from 1962 to 1993 in Adventureland.
The location is home today to the Tropical Hideaway Dole Whip stand.
2) Space Place Cottage Fries
Galactic Grill
Tossed in parmesan butter and parsley and served with house-made ranch
The seasoned cottage fries were served at the Space Place restaurant as a side dish with the Voyager double cheeseburger or a la carte.
The Tomorrowland restaurant that operated from 1977 to 1996 is now home to Alien Pizza Planet.
3) Banana Split
Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor
Vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice creams topped with strawberries, pineapple, hot fudge, fresh banana, chopped nuts, whipped cream and a cherry
The Banana Split was the most famous dessert available at the Carnation Cafe when Disneyland opened in 1955.
4) Cowboy Fries
Golden Horseshoe
Topped with nacho cheese, sauteed ground beef, burger sauce and butter pickles
The loaded fries are a deconstructed tribute to the cheeseburgers and French fries sold in Frontierland when Disneyland opened in 1955.
5) Mickey Hat Cookie
Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe and Market House
Dipped in chocolate with a chocolate decoration
The Mickey hat cookie offers a tip of the hat to the original Mouseketeer ears worn on the “Mickey Mouse Club” television show.
The Mouseketeers made their first public appearance on July 17, 1955 during the opening festivities for Disneyland.
Nobody knew who the enthusiastic group of kids was at the time, but that would soon change. The Mouseketeers became overnight TV stars when the “Mickey Mouse Club” first aired in October 1955.
6) Lemon Chiffon Pretzel
Pretzel stand near Star Tours
Cream cheese-filled pretzel dipped in lemon-flavored icing and topped with crushed vanilla wafers
Walt loved pie for dessert especially lemon chiffon pie with a graham cracker crust.
This twist on the classic puts the lemon chiffon topping on a pretzel.
7) Fried Tamale Walking Taco
Rancho del Zocalo
Fried beef tamale with chili, corn chips, and diced onions with cilantro, shredded cheese and sour cream
The chili-topped tamale harks back to the early days of Disneyland when Rancho del Zocalo used to be known as Casa de Fritos named for the corn chip sponsor.
8) Mocha Cream Puff
Rancho del Zocalo
Filled with cinnamon-mocha pastry cream and topped with chocolate-covered corn chips
The mocha flavoring offers a nod to the Maxwell House Coffee House that opened in December 1955 on Town Square. The sponsorship changed in 1957 to Hills Bros. Coffee.
9) Hook’s Galley Tuna Melt
Red Rose Taverne
Fresh tuna salad topped with muenster and herb-marinated tomatoes served with house chips
Tuna sandwiches, tuna burgers and even a hot tuna pie were on the menu at the Chicken of the Sea pirate ship restaurant that was a Fantasyland landmark from 1955 to 1982.
The name of the restaurant changed to Captain Hook’s Galley when sponsorship was dropped in 1969.
10) Apple Pancake Rolls
River Belle Terrace
Apple pie topping, walnut streusel and cinnamon chantilly cream served with choice of bacon or sausage (Available for breakfast only)
The Aunt Jemima Pancake House that operated at Disneyland until 1970 used to serve Apple Pancake Roll-Ups.
The restaurant with patio seating along the Rivers of America is now the location of River Belle Terrace.
11) W.E.D. Chili Cheese Baked Potato
Troubadour Tavern
Topped with beef and bean chili, cheese, sour cream, diced onions and cornbread
The W.E.D. in the menu item name stands for Walter Elias Disney, who loved chili and beans with some saltine crackers on the side.
The Walt Disney Archives has several variations of Walt’s personal chili recipe on file including one that dates back to 1958.
12) Chili Cheese Corn Dog
Corn Dog Castle
Topped with chili, shredded cheddar and corn chips
Walt would often stop by the Carnation Cafe for a bowl of chili when he was at Disneyland.
The Corn Dog Castle in Disney California Adventure will top a corn dog with Walt’s favorite chili.
13) Dancing Shimmering Lights
Troubadour Tavern
Sweet berry lemonade with blackberry topper and sanding sugar
The “Dancing Waters” fountain light show (later known as “Fantasy Waters”) was a hidden gem at the Disneyland Hotel from 1970 to 2007.
The free show open to the general public was a precursor to the “World of Color” at Disney California Adventure.
