The second opening day vehicle was a horse-drawn Surrey which lasted until 1971 this horse-drawn cart with tall wooden wheels carried 8 to 10 passenger spread out over three bench seats.
The Horse-Drawn Surrey was a delightful ride that allowed guests to take a leisurely tour of Disneyland’s Main Street, U.S.A. area. The surrey was a carriage-style vehicle pulled by horses, providing an old-fashioned and nostalgic transportation experience.Guests would board the Horse-Drawn Surrey and be taken on a slow and scenic journey along Main Street, U.S.A., offering views of the various shops, buildings, and atmosphere of this iconic section of the park. It provided a unique way to experience the charm and ambiance of Main Street, U.S.A. while enjoying the leisurely pace of the horse-drawn transportation.
From Main Street Vehicles Story Guide 1966:The surreys are also reproductions from pictures of surreys found in the Standard Vehicle Catalogue. Necessary parts were located or made by Owen Pope. Owen and Dolly Pope have operated our Pony Farm since the park opened in 1955, and did the original design and construction of the surreys. Currently, the Pony Farm is about 6 1/2 acres in size. To save wear and tear on the ponies, surreys have always been made as lightly and delicately as possible. Because of the great number of guests carried, the wheels are more sturdy than those on most of the catalogue models—another safety factor built into the attraction.
From WED Disneyland Dictionary 1968 With the fringe on top the Surreys are drawn by pony teams, mainly those of a cross between Hackney and Shetland breeds. They travel from City Hall to Sleeping Beauty Castle.
