Of all the many cars boats trains and carts guests can ride in at Disneyland. Only one has required it's passengers to help with the actual propulsion. That's what Indian War canoes in Frontierland asked of its guests. Starting on Independence Day 1956. The canoes made an approximately 12 minute trip around Tom Sawyer's Island, but the canoes deferred right away to bigger less mobile watercraft. The canoes weigh 2,000-2,500 pounds empty. Canoes were built by a company in Maine. Original canoes had small engines to supplement the guests. Each carries 18 guests and two guides. The canoes leave the Indian Village on the south bank of the river. Piloted by Indian guides who help "pioneers" paddle the 35-foot-long "birch bark" canoes on the Rivers Of America.
