Disneyland has expanded its new mobile checkout system to two theme park shops. This allows shoppers to use the Disneyland app to scan for products, leave the store for purchases, and completely bypass the checkout counter line.

Disneyland’s Emporium and Disney California Adventure’s Elias and Company began offering mobile checkouts for their products on Thursday, June 24, according to Disneyland officials.

The mobile checkout system for merchandise is an extension of the mobile ordering system, which has become an immediate favorite option for purchases at Disney theme park restaurants and food stands.

The· Mobile checkout pilot program tested During the Christmas holiday season at the World of Disney Store in Downtown Disney.

How does Disneyland Product Mobile Checkout work?

Shoppers use the Disneyland app or use their smartphones to scan the QR code to access the mobile checkout system. The QR code directs shoppers to the Disneyland app or encourages them to download the app.

Shoppers need to pick up a mobile checkout shopping bag at the store and scan the items they want to buy when adding items to the bag.

The product scanner opens the camera window of your smartphone. Shoppers place the on-screen target box in the center of the barcode tag for the item they want to buy. The scanned items will be displayed in the app’s virtual shopping bag.

When you tap Checkout in the app, the item will be paid using the credit card connected to the Disneyland app. The shopper presents the QR code to the employee at the designated mobile checkout exit of the store.

The Amazon Go store uses similar shop-and-go assumptions with no lines or checkouts. Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology keeps track of what shoppers take from the shelves of virtual carts and charges their accounts when they leave the store.

The Scan and Go Shopping Pilot Program has been tested at Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, Seven-Eleven, Dollar General, Kroger’s King Supers, and Giant Eagle grocery stores.

Disney theme parks are heavily inclined to technical solutions for waiting in line, from mobile attraction cues to mobile food orders. The use and adoption of technical options increased and accelerated only during the coronavirus pandemic.

Orders for mobile food at the reopened Disney theme parks have skyrocketed from 9% of sales to a stunning 84% since the pandemic began. At Disney theme parks, cashless payments reach nearly 90%.

Disney’s new mobile checkout system means fewer touchpoints in the COVID-19 era and potentially fewer cashiers and checkout counters in the future.

The pandemic has provided Disneyland with a great opportunity to test new scan-and-go technology. Due to the relaxed capacity limits, World of Disney operated at a pay-as-you-go entrance with only one entrance and exit to the store. This reduces the chance of theft known in the retail industry as shrinking during shop-and-go testing.

According to Disneyland officials, there are no concrete plans to extend the product’s mobile checkout pilot program to Disneyland, Disneyland California Adventure, or other shops in the Downtown Disney District.
