Disneyland Makes Tossing Out Leftover Food A Little Less Wasteful

We’ve all been there when it comes to leftover Disneyland food.

There’s no way to finish that eyes-bigger-than-your-stomach turkey leg. Nobody wants the dregs at the bottom of the popcorn bucket. The little one is not in the mood for a corndog after all. You’re unable to finish that Mickey-shaped pretzel after a day filled with snacks and treats.

It’s a shame to toss unfinished food, but takeout containers are not really an option at Disneyland.

Now the Hungriest Place on Earth has a way for you to feel a little less guilty about tossing out that half-eaten treat or meal.

In an effort to reduce waste, Disneyland has launched a pilot program that adds food waste trash cans next to the traditional landfill and recycling bins.

The pilot program is starting at the Galactic Grill in Tomorrowland at Disneyland. Visitors are asked to sort their trash into landfill, recycling and food waste bins.

The unfit for human consumption food waste is sent to a third-party vendor that converts the leftovers into feed nutrients for farm animals.

“It’s our responsibility to create immersive experiences and happiness for our guests, but to do so in an environmentally sustainable way,” Disneyland Environmental Integration Manager Lotus Thai said in the latest Mousemail newsletter. “We have a responsibility to do and be better for our cast members, our guests, our community and future generations.”

Disneyland recently announced a goal of achieving zero landfill waste by 2030.

Disney’s Anaheim theme parks have been recovering food scraps since 2014 — mostly at food and beverage locations.
