Walt Disney Imagineering is rebooting another Disneyland attraction with a female lead character and revamped backstory to make it “more relevant” as the Anaheim theme park continues to update rides that have become culturally outdated.
Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin at Disneyland is getting a new plot twist that throws Jessica Rabbit into the lead role as a private eye determined to stamp out a Toontown crime wave.
Some scenes in Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin featuring Jessica Rabbit are being updated to be more relevant and reflect a new twist in the character’s story within the attraction, according to Disneyland officials. A scene featuring Jessica Rabbit and the weasels with an automobile as well as the finale scene of Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin are being updated, according to Disneyland officials.
Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin is the latest Disneyland attraction to undergo a major renovation to remove outdated and problematic scenes — joining Pirates of the Caribbean, Splash Mountain and Jungle Cruise.
Attractions are updated from time to time for a variety of reasons, according to Disneyland officials.
The updated Car Toon Spin storyline turns Jessica Rabbit into the newest private eye in Mickey’s Toontown on the lookout for Toon Patrol Weasels responsible for a sharp rise in crime.
“Jessica Rabbit has determined it is past time for her to throw her fedora in the ring by starting her own private investigation service,” according to the new Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin backstory. “Watch out weasels, your reign of terror is over.”
A Car Toon Spin scene featuring Jessica Rabbit tied up in the trunk of a car has already been updated with the damsel in distress replaced by barrels of cartoon-erasing paint thinner known as Dip in the trunk.
Disneyland’s Car Toon Spin ride is based on the 1988 film “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” where the cartoon superstar is accused of murder and must turn to detective Eddie Valiant to find the killer. At Disneyland, Car Toon Spin riders hop in a taxi cab in a race through Toontown in search of Jessica Rabbit.
The Car Toon Spin update comes as construction continues in Toontown on the new Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway trackless dark ride set to open in 2023. Several Toontown eateries, meet-and-greet locations and playground attractions remain closed since Disneyland reopened in late April after an extended coronavirus closure.
Disney theme parks have pledged to integrate more diversity and inclusion into existing attractions and remove culturally outdated depictions.
Imagineering removed several racially insensitive scenes from the Jungle Cruise ride and replaced them with comic scenes featuring animals and a new cast of culturally diverse characters as part of a major overall of the attraction. The Jungle Cruise attraction reopened in July after undergoing a major makeover to remove outdated cultural depictions and add a woman of color at the center of the revamped backstory of the attraction.
Splash Mountain will soon go under the knife to introduce a new backstory based on “The Princess and the Frog” after removing the log ride’s entire “Song of the South” theme based on a movie Disney has long repudiated. The 2009 “Princess and the Frog” was celebrated as Disney’s first animated depiction of an African-American princess.
