A massive Baymax figure in winged armor from “Big Hero 6” will fly over Sleeping Beauty Castle during the new “Wondrous Journeys” fireworks show coming to Disneyland for the Disney100 anniversary celebrating a century of Disney animation.
Baymax will soar high above the Disneyland castle during the new nighttime spectacular in a thrilling moment of heroism “inspiring us all to fight for our dreams,” according to the Disney Parks blog.
“Wondrous Journeys” debuts on Jan. 27 along with the Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway trackless dark ride and the “World of Color — One” water show as part of the Disney100 celebration at the Disneyland resort.
The Baymax figure will take to the skies over Sleeping Beauty Castle in an aerial role filled by Tinker Bell and Nemo in previous fireworks shows.
The beloved inflatable healthcare robot from “Big Hero 6” wears red exoskeleton armor with back-mounted wings when appearing in superhero form.
Eagle-eyed fans have been anticipating a big role for Baymax in “Wondrous Journeys” ever since photos of aerial test runs at Disneyland appeared on Reddit in early December, according to WDW News Today.
Baymax is having a bit of a star turn at the Anaheim theme parks with the Pacific Wharf food court area at Disney California Adventure to be transformed soon with a “Big Hero 6” San Fransokyo theme.
The new nighttime spectacular will feature nods to every film released by Walt Disney Animation Studios — including key moments dedicated to “Frozen,” “Moana,” “The Princess and the Frog,” “Encanto,” “Peter Pan,” “Hercules,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Pocahontas,” “Treasure Planet” and “Big Hero 6.”
The backstory of “Wondrous Journeys” begins with blank pieces of paper that become pencil sketches before adding splashes of color and then animation through the use of projection effects on Sleeping Beauty Castle and building facades on Main Street U.S.A., It’s a Small World and Tom Sawyer Island. In one scene, Sleeping Beauty Castle transforms into the Madrigal Casita From “Encanto.”
