One of the most impressive effects in any Disneyland ride is back in action after years of dormancy.
When Rise of the Resistance, the marquee ride in the Star Wars land opened in Jan. 2020, it featured an incredible gauntlet through the cannons of a First Order star destroyer. As the heavy artillery surged forward to fire at resistance fighters, guests’ ride vehicles lurched between the passing cannons.
The moment was one of the most memorable of the ride but very few guests ever experienced it. Due to its highly technical nature, the precise timing required for the cannons to move often failed. When Disneyland reopened after the 2020 COVID-19 closures, the cannons rarely functioned. Instead, they stood static while vehicles glided past them.
On Friday, though, the cannons came back to life, moving again for the first time in years. “Teams have been working for a long time to restore the effect,” theme park reporter Scott Gustin wrote on X. Given the finicky nature of the technology, Disneyland guests hoping to see Rise of the Resistance in its full glory should check out the ride while they can.
Due to the same technical difficulties, the cannons also stopped moving at Rise of the Resistance in Disney World. It’s not clear if the fix will be applied there too.
