On Jan. 27, Disneyland kicked off 100 Years of Wonder, a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Walt Disney Company. The yearlong party includes a makeover for Sleeping Beauty Castle and “platinum” decorations throughout both parks, new food and merchandise, and the opening of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, a new ride in Toontown.

It also includes two new nighttime shows. World of Color One at Disney California Adventure is a new version of the World of Color water show, including scenes from “Star Wars” and "Avengers" movies, as well as “Soul,” “Coco,” and many other Disney movies. Wondrous Journeys at Disneyland is a new fireworks and projection show that includes nods to every animated film the company has ever created.

On opening day, die-hard fans were so excited to see the new fireworks show that they didn’t just line up in droves to see it, but many people staked out prime spots in front of the castle hours in advance. As of about 5 p.m. Friday, hundreds upon hundreds of people had already gathered in the hub to reserve viewing spots for the 9:30 p.m. event. At that point, cast members had already put up ropes blocking off viewing areas from walking areas to maintain crowd flow, something which generally isn’t done until shortly before the evening entertainment — definitely not five or more hours early. At 8:53 p.m., Disneyland made an announcement over the park’s speakers that all viewing areas for Wondrous Journeys were full.

Wondrous Journeys features all of Disney’s animated films, as well as two surprise appearances from flying characters. Toward the beginning of the show, the Blue Fairy from “Pinocchio” flies over the castle. Later, Baymax from “Big Hero 6” makes an appearance, with laser projections flying out from the castle over the crowd.

Wondrous Journeys plays every night at Disneyland. During the week, the show is only the projections; on the weekends, it’s the full show with fireworks.
