Walt Disney Imagineering plans to tap into all five senses, adding the smell and taste of fresh beignets to the sights, sounds and touch of the experience on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure when the former Splash Mountain attraction returns after an extensive makeover.

Disneyland visitors will smell the sweet scent of beignets frying in the queue of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure when the attraction opens later this year, according to Disneyland officials.

Disneyland has used machines called Smellitizers to pump scents into attractions and themed lands for decades.

Smellitizers beneath the windows of Disneyland’s Candy Palace and Candy Kitchen release the scents of baked goods and sugary confections onto Main Street U.S.A.

Smellitizers pump musty smells into the Haunted Mansion, smokey odors into the Pirates of the Caribbean and ginger scents into the sushi restaurant scene in the Monsters Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue.

Disney received a patent in 2001 for a Smellitizer system on the Soarin’ attraction that releases grass, rose and sea breeze smells from the canopies above the seats, according to PhD Princess.

In 2019, Disney patented “scent blending” to strategically release smells that match up to visuals or other sensory contexts, according to Indiana University Bloomington.

Disney World riders hooked by the fresh beignets smell can taste the real thing once the attraction opens to the general public. Tiana’s Famous Beignets will be sold at Golden Oak Outpost and Friar’s Nook at the Magic Kingdom starting on June 28, according to the Disney Food Blog.

Disneyland already sells beignets at several locations throughout the resort.

The Mint Julep Bar in New Orleans Square sells Mickey-shaped Beignets for $5.49 for a three-pack or $8.99 for a six-pack. Next door, Tiana’s Palace has a Lemon Glazed Beignet with Lemon IceBox Pie filling for $4.49.

Beignets Expressed in Downtown Disney offers traditional powdered sugar beignets as well as glazed, sprinkles, Strawberry Shortcake, Bananas Foster and Grasshopper toppings for $10.99 to $23.99.
