A fun-filled day at Disneyland came to an abrupt end two years ago when Edward Bates tried to help his elderly mother step from an It's a Small World boat.
A novice ride operator is alleged to have accidentally hit a switch that caused the boat to lurch, throwing Bates off his feet and wedging him between the boat and walkway. The 50-year-old truck driver from Walnut

I am here because of a promise to a child. It seemed so safe, 3000 miles from California, to be playing Lady Bountiful, perched on the side of my 9-year-old godchild's bed, saying munificently, "One Day, Auntie will take you to Disneyland."
But now here he is, thumbs plugging away at a Game Boy while our bus edges through the Los Angeles traffic, onto the freeway,

I remember Riverview. This vast amusement park was located on Chicago's North Side. It was magnificent, dangerous and thrilling. There were freak shows; there was the renowned Bobs roller coaster, built as the fastest in the world; there was the Rotor. a room-sized cylinder in which one stood back against the wall and was spun around while the floor dropped away; there

Disneyland, a monument to childhood, is also a test of how well you've grown up. Your first visit is guaranteed to be interesting, just as the first time you drive a car, have sex or spend a night by yourself is filled with wonder. But by the tenth or hundredth time you do it, amazement will elude you unless you apply an adult imagination to the experience.

The Idea, Walt Disney once said, was conceived on a park bench and nurtured by peanuts. "Saturday was always 'Daddy's Day' and I would take my two daughters to the merry-go-round and sit on a bench while they rode," he recalled "And sitting alone, eating peanuts, I felt there should be something built, some kind of a family park where parents and children could have fun

The original name for this attraction (before the attraction was built) was The Pink Elephant Ride!
The first Dumbo Elephants weighed 700 pounds each.
A figure of Timothy Mouse rides atop the central hub. The figure originally held a training whip, later replaced with the "magic feather." It has since been changed back to the whip.
During his 1957 visit, Former US President Harry S Truman politely declined a ride on Dumbo Flying Elephants. Elephants are the symbol of America's Republican Party; Truman was a Democrat.
At the 1992 Disneyana convention, one of the original ride vehicles sold for US$16,000.

From Steve Birnbaum brings you the best of Disneyland 1982:
When Harry Truman came to Disneyland in 1957, he and his wife visited almost every attraction in the park except this one "a Republican symbol," he proclaimed. A more plausible explanation is that it has always been something of a kiddie ride, an experience especially loved by youngsters in the two- through-seven age group (and their parents, who happily go along to watch their kids' smiles). The all-new design, however, a vital part of the Fantasyland renovation, has made the ride a showpiece of the area, a mechanical marvel that can hold even the most blasé grown-up's attention. Dumbo was the flying elephant character in the 1941 film about a baby elephant who discovers, on falling into a bucketful of champagne, that his inordinately large ears, which have previously been such a source of embarrassment, can actually help him to fly. Timothy Mouse, who becomes his friend's manager after the flying elephant is hired as a star (by after the flying el the same circus folk who once scoffed at him), stands in command at the center of the attraction.
