The wares in this sprawling establishment at the Town Square end of Main Street are by no means as old-fashioned as the mansard-roofed, tin-ceilinged, velvet-curtained setting might suggest. Sunglasses and designer handbags, china figurines and music boxes, T-shirts and sweat shirts, folding umbrellas and nylon totes, character hats, calculators and cassette recorders make up the bulk of the stock. There's a little bit of everything, and the variety and the selection are likely to please. In the doll corner, for example, there's not just one doll, but dozens, some inexpensive enough to take home on the spot and some so costly, with their corkscrew curls and handmade shoes, that only collectors can do more than admire. China figurines come in all kinds of variations: Mickey Mouse appears as motorcyclist, skier, logger, bird-watcher, fire chief, football player, policeman, milkman, baker, and golfer; even Donald and Minnie are seen in an assortment of roles. Goofy, Pluto, Daisy, Lady, Tramp, the Dalmatians, Alice, the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, Dumbo, Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, Mary Poppins, and other familiar Disney figures also crowd the shelves. In addition, the Emporium is the only place in the park that sells the distinctive fabric-and- leather Mickey Mouse wallets. There are nearly two dozen cash registers, and at the end of the operating day they're all mobbed. As you're queuing up to pay for your purchases, it's easy to understand why the store accounts for better than 25 percent of all Disneyland merchandising sales annually. For maximum enjoyment, by the way, visit the Emporium in the morning, when Disneylanders have the most time to show off their wares. Also, be sure to note the amazingly detailed window dis- plays, usually related to the latest Walt Disney Productions film release.
