Disneyland attendance has climbed steadily from 25% of 2019 levels when the Anaheim theme park reopened in late April after an extended coronavirus closure to nearly 85% by the end of the summer, according to a new report from a data analytics company.

Disneyland saw visits rebound during the summer of 2021 and climb close to pre-pandemic 2019 levels, according to a report from Placer.ai, a firm that tracks foot traffic at theme parks, retailers and restaurants.

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure saw 80% attendance declines in 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions that kept California theme parks shuttered for most of the year, according to a report from the Themed Entertainment Association and AECOM.

Disneyland attendance declined from 18.7 million in 2019 to 3.7 million in 2020, according to the TEA/AECOM report. Disney California Adventure saw a similar drop to 1.9 million in 2020 from 9.9 million in 2019. ??Disneyland attracted an average of 51,000 visitors per day in 2019 while DCA drew an average of 27,000 daily visitors, according to TEA/AECOM.

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure plan to steadily increase attendance capacity in an “aggressively but measured” manner, Disney CFO Christine McCarthy said during a quarterly earnings call in August.

Disneyland attendance was just below 25% compared to 2019 levels when the parks reopened on April 30 after a 412-day state-mandated coronavirus closure, according to the Placer.ai report.

Disneyland attendance climbed to approximately 35% compared to 2019 levels by early June and more than 60% after California state officials lifted most COVID-19 health and safety restrictions on June 15, according to the report.

In July, Disneyland’s daily attendance topped 75% compared to 2019 levels, according to the report.

Disneyland attendance growth slowed slightly in early August in part due to rising COVID-19 cases related to the Delta variant, but continued to rise in late summer after the brief downtick, according to the report.

By late August, Disneyland attendance climbed to nearly 85% of 2019 levels, according to the report.

Walt Disney World, which reopened its four Florida theme parks in July 2020, saw attendance levels jump from 50% in April to more than 90% in July compared to 2019 levels, according to the report. In late August, Disney World saw foot traffic levels top pre-pandemic highs, according to the report.

Disneyland “saw a much slower recovery due in large part to the nature of state-level COVID restrictions in place in California, especially when compared to the far more relaxed limitations in Florida,” according to the Placer.ai report.

Disneyland and Disney World also saw slight increases in the average household income of visitors in 2021 compared to 2019 thanks to travel-restricted locals with dollars to spare visiting the parks, according to the Placer.ai report.

Disneyland officials rarely if ever discuss attendance or capacity levels.
