Disneyland is prepping some big celebrations of the park's history for the 70th anniversary, and here's what to expect!
2025 is going to be a big year for Disneyland as the park will be celebrating its 70th anniversary in July. The last anniversary year was in 2020, which, of course, was the year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, the park was closed until 2021.
Disney is hoping to make up for it with Disneyland getting some nice stuff for its anniversary, which seems a celebration of the park's legacy. Here's a quick look at some of the best stuff to look forward to!
Walt Disney A Magical Life gets a new date
First, there's a shift for the upcoming Walt Disney–A Magical Life show. The new attraction is set on the Main Street Opera House, which has long been home to the iconic Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln show.
The new show will boast a cutting edge Audio-Animatronic of Walt using original vocal recordings of the man replicating his pitch of Disneyland the talk of the park's growth.
The show was originally set to debut on May 17. It's now been delayed until July 17, which is the actual anniversary of the park's opening. The delay simply seems Disney figuring opening it on the actual date makes more sense.
Fans should expect to see some great detail in the show as the Disney family is working with Imagineers. The rocking chair on stage is the actual one owned by Walt, and various props include the Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded to Walt by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. There will also be plenty of the many humanitarian awards gifted to Walt in his life.
The preshow area will also be shifting as the outer lobby will contain a gallery of Disneyland's development. That includes some of the original concept paintings and memorabilia. Also, the model of the U.S. Capitol will be replaced by a display of the development of AA technology.
It's expected this new show will run through the anniversary year. But don't worry Lincoln fans; Disney plans to bring that show back, where Abe and Walt will swap out performance runs for a while.
A special new tribute
Before the new Walt show comes along, Disney will present a new program at the Main Street Cinema. Currently, the theater shows a run of classic Mickey Mouse shorts, including Steamboat Willie.
Starting on July 17, the cinema will now run The Sherman Brothers: The Last Verse. This three-and-a-half-minute video premiered last November on a special on the making of Mary Poppins. It's a beautiful tribute to Richard and Robert Sherman, the master songwriters behind that movie and scores of Disney rides.
The title refers to Richard Sherman, who had written a special new verse for It's a Small World before his passing in 2024. As it happens, the Small World ride will add that verse to the lyrics of the iconic attraction.
It's likely we'll be hearing more big developments coming for the anniversary, but these two shows are a wonderful way for Disneyland to celebrate its history as it prepares for a huge milestone for the company.
