The modern era has caught up with pay phones at the Disneyland Resort.

Thanks to the incredible growth of cellphones, the resort has quietly removed all the pay phones from its original theme park.

Locations such as those across from the exit to Space Mountain have been cleared of the phones, and in other areas of Disneyland.

In the 1960s, AT&T, along with Pacific Bell were major sponsors at Disneyland of the Circlevision attraction in Tomorrowland. Besides showing the film "America the Beautiful," it also showcased what were then future phone technologies. In the exit area, there was a video phone, banks of pay phones, and large booths that entire families could fit into to call someone on a speaker pay phone.

Now, that is all gone. In that former exit area now sits a shop called Little Green Men Store Command, after the characters from "Toy Story."

Resort officials said the phones were removed because there was no more demand for them. They also said that anyone with an emergency could reach out to employees for help.

Nothing official has been announced as to whether the pay phones would be removed from Disney California Adventure; they are still there as of this date -- just inside the main entrance.

For those with nostalgia for the old days, there are some fake phones in the Market House on Main Street, U.S.A. But they are there for show and entertainment purposes only. Picking up the receiver, one can listen to a recording of an old-style party line phone conversation.

Also, there are pay phones in all the resort's hotels, and in Downtown Disney.
