Walt Disney Imagineering reveals how the dramatic Rise of the Resistance escape pod sequence works during a new Disney+ show that was offered behind-the-scenes access inside the new attraction coming to Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

The sixth episode of “The Imagineering Story” docuseries on Disney+ debuting Friday, Dec. 13 shows how the Disney creative team combined three rides into one to create the signature finale experience in Rise of the Resistance.

The new Star Wars attraction puts visitors in the middle of a battle between the villainous First Order and the heroic Resistance. Rebel heroine Rey recruits riders to join the Resistance and fight the First Order in a dangerous off-planet mission. Along the way, the recruits are captured and taken aboard a Star Destroyer, break out of a First Order detention cell, elude the clutches of Kylo Ren and escape back to a secret base on the Star Wars planet of Batuu, the setting for the Galaxy’s Edge themed lands at Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios

The Rise of the Resistance attraction opened on Dec. 5 at the Florida theme park and debuts Jan. 17 at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Anaheim.

For the most complicated Disney attraction ever created, the Imagineers opted for a trackless dark ride vehicle as the best way to explore a First Order Star Destroyer.

“We also knew that we needed a bit more thrill, a bit more visceral thrill,” Imagineering portfolio creative executive Scott Trowbridge says in the Disney+ docuseries. “So we came up with the idea of what if we take that trackless ride vehicle and what if we mount it to a motion-based experience like Star Tours.”

But the Imagineers didn’t stop there with their “crazy idea.”

“Let’s take that trackless ride vehicle, let’s put it on that motion base and then let’s take that whole motion base and attach it to a free fall drop tower,” Trowbridge says in the documentary.

As Trowbridge speaks, the Disney+ docuseries shows behind-the-scenes footage of the trackless ride vehicle docking into the motion-base platform and the freefall drop tower in action.

“The Imagineering Story” pulls back the curtain on the often-secretive Imagineering creative development process with the docuseries receiving unprecedented access during construction of Rise of the Resistance.
