The Magic Happens parade, Fantasmic nighttime spectacular, Mickey’s Mix Magic fireworks, “Frozen” stage show and more than a dozen attractions may not return until a later date when Disneyland and Disney California Adventure finally reopen.

Social distancing measures will force Disneyland and Disney California Adventure to keep some parades, nighttime spectaculars, shows, rides and attractions closed once the parks reopen following an extended coronavirus closure.

Disney’s Anaheim theme parks and hotels remain closed until further notice amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The Downtown Disney outdoor shopping mall is set to reopen on July 9.

Select attractions will remain closed and certain parades and nighttime spectaculars that draw large crowds will remain dark once Disney’s Anaheim theme parks reopen, according to the Disneyland website.

But which ones?

Disney World’s reopening plan offers a glimpse of which attractions, shows, parades and nighttime spectaculars could remain unavailable until a later date when Disneyland and DCA eventually reopen.

The Walt Disney World resort plans to fully reopen in mid-July after extended coronavirus closures of its four Florida theme parks. Disney’s Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom theme parks will reopen on July 11 while the Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios parks will return on July 15.

The Disneyland resort only had one parade when the parks closed: Magic Happens. The new twice-daily Magic Happens parade had been performing along Main Street U.S.A. for only two weeks when Disneyland closed on March 14 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Festival of Fantasy parade at the Magic Kingdom won’t return until a later date. Expect Magic Happens to go on hiatus as well.

Disneyland could choose to add live entertainment along the parade route with impromptu performances by Magic Happens performers. Expect the Disneyland marching band — which rarely stands still and plows its own route along Main Street U.S.A. -— and other atmosphere talent to add a burst of energy to the parks.

Disneyland’s Fantasmic and DCA’s World of Color certainly draw large crowds. Expect the nighttime spectaculars to remain dark when the Anaheim parks reopen. Fantasmic at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and the Epcot Forever water-based nighttime spectacular are not scheduled to immediately return. Fireworks shows at the Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios are set to remain on hiatus.

Disneyland could opt to offer the occasional unscheduled nighttime surprise — a short burst of fireworks overhead or brief glimpse of dancing water fountains — that would keep crowds low yet still entertain fans.

A pair of Broadway-style shows -— “Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and “Finding Nemo the Musical” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom — won’t return until a later date when the Disney World parks reopen. The hour-long “Frozen Live at the Hyperion” stage show is a top draw playing several times a day at Disney California Adventure.

At Florida’s Magic Kingdom, the Walt Disney World Railroad, Main Street Vehicles and Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade will remain closed when the park reopens. Turtle Talk with Crush isn’t scheduled to return when Epcot reopens. The Star Wars: Launch Bay at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will also remain shuttered. Similar versions of all of those attractions can be found at the Disneyland resort.

Character meet-and-greet locations — like Mickey’s House, Pixie Hollow and Fantasy Faire — are also expected to be closed at Disneyland and DCA.

A handful of Disneyland attractions were down for refurbishment when the park closed. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Haunted Mansion, Snow White’s Scary Adventures, King Arthur Carrousel and Gadget Go Coaster remain behind construction walls once Disneyland reopens.

Much like Disney World, the vast majority of attractions at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are expected to be operational when the parks reopen.
