Disneyland plans to test a virtual queue on Indiana Jones Adventure as the Anaheim theme park tries to reduce the length of the socially distanced standby queue for the popular Adventureland attraction.

Disneyland will begin testing the Indiana Jones Adventure virtual queue on Tuesday, May 11 as a temporary measure to alleviate foot traffic pinch points in front of the attraction that returned when the park reopened last month at limited capacity after a 13-month coronavirus closure.

California’s COVID-19 health and safety mandates require theme parks to eliminate all indoor queueing areas. The result: Disneyland has had to come up with creative ways to route socially distanced queues throughout the park for rides with extensive indoor queues. That’s been a challenge with rides like Indiana Jones Adventure, Rise of the Resistance, Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion.

Disneyland has been using the upstairs Jungle Cruise queue as an overflow line for Indiana Jones Adventure while the shuttered water ride undergoes an extensive makeover to remove outdated cultural depictions.

The temporary Indiana Jones Adventure virtual queue will be similar to the system used with the popular Rise of the Resistance attraction in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Visitors will be able to access the Indy virtual queue through the Disneyland app — much like they do for Rise of the Resistance. Don’t expect the Indy virtual queue to be in use all day like the Rise virtual queue. Disneyland anticipates using a hybrid of virtual and standby queues for Indiana Jones Adventure.

That means you will want to check the Disneyland app to see which queue is in use on Indiana Jones Adventure. It also means you should check the Indy app page throughout the day to see if the virtual queue is turned on so you can use the system like a de facto FastPass — which isn’t in use during the phased reopening of the parks.

Visitors will have to be inside Disneyland to access the Indiana Jones Adventure virtual queue. Parkhopper visitors starting their day at Disney California Adventure won’t be able to get in the Indy virtual queue until they’ve hopped to Disneyland after 1 p.m. The Indy virtual queue also will not open at 7 a.m. before Disneyland opens like the Rise of the Resistance virtual queue does.

When the Indy virtual queue is turned on, visitors will be able to get a return group number via the Disneyland app — just like booking a boarding group for Rise of the Resistance.

Since this is a test, Disneyland could turn on and off the Indy virtual queue at any time. There will be no set times for turning on the virtual queue like there currently is for Rise of the Resistance.

Disneyland visitors can be in both the Indy and Rise virtual queues at the same time, but they can only use each virtual queue once per day.

Disneyland hasn’t announced plans to use the virtual queue system on other attractions — but Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion would be good candidates. Both of the New Orleans Square attractions have long socially distanced queues that weave their ways throughout the land at peak periods.
